Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might be wondering about working with Propel — whether you're hiring or exploring opportunities.

For Companies
How is Propel different from a larger recruiting firm?
We're a boutique firm by design. That means you work directly with senior recruiters who specialize in finance and accounting — not a junior account manager who passes you off to a sourcer. Our team brings 45+ combined years of Bay Area recruiting experience to every search.
What roles do you place?
We specialize exclusively in accounting, finance, and administrative roles at all levels — from staff accountant to CFO, and from executive assistant to office manager.
How long does a typical search take?
Most of our searches are completed in 4–8 weeks, depending on level and complexity. Senior leadership searches typically take 8–12 weeks. We provide weekly updates throughout.
Do you work on contingency or retained search?
Both. Contingency for most direct-hire roles, retained for senior leadership or confidential searches. We'll recommend the right structure during our intake conversation.
What is your fee structure?
Fees are typically a percentage of the candidate's first-year base compensation, paid upon successful placement. Exact terms depend on the role and structure — we'll walk you through everything transparently before kickoff.
Do you offer a placement guarantee?
Yes. All placements come with a guarantee period; if the placement doesn't work out within that window, we'll re-run the search at no additional cost.
Do you place remote, hybrid, or on-site roles?
All three. We help our clients structure roles based on what's strategically right for their team.
What geographies do you cover?
While our roots began in the Bay Area, we support searches and place talent across the United States.
For Candidates
Will my current employer know I'm talking to Propel?
No. All conversations are strictly confidential. We never share your information with a client without your explicit permission.
Does it cost anything to work with Propel?
Never. Our services are 100% free to candidates — we're compensated by the companies that hire you.
I'm not actively looking. Should I still reach out?
Yes. Some of our best placements start with a casual conversation. We're happy to share market intelligence and stay in touch for when the timing's right.
How do you decide which roles to share with me?
We listen first — about your goals, comp expectations, culture preferences, and constraints. Then we only surface roles that fit. We don't pitch every open job.
What if I'm new to the Bay Area job market?
We'd love to talk. Our team has 45+ years of market intelligence and can help you understand comp ranges, key employers, and what to expect from the local hiring process.
Can you help me with my resume or interview prep?
Yes. Every candidate we represent gets interview prep tailored to the specific hiring manager. We've placed people at most of the Bay Area finance teams you'd consider, so we can share insider context.
What levels of roles do you place?
Everything from staff/senior accountant through CFO, and from administrative associate through office manager. We work with early-career professionals through C-suite executives.
